Meet Our Newest Massage Therapist, Emily McCarthy

Emily McCarthy is a registered member of the Association for Soft Tissue Therapists (SMA) and will be available for bookings on Friday mornings at Clinical Massage London in N16, London.

Emily’s unique treatment style seamlessly integrates the more soothing, flowing style of Swedish and holistic massage with a more clinically focused approach.

I treat every client as an individual and will adapt each treatment according to their needs. If someone needs to completely zone out, we might opt for a treatment with minimal communication throughout; if someone needs clinical work for a pain condition, we might decide that dialogue will be key to the treatment and maintain communication throughout. I love to treat all clients, and am particularly passionate about treating stress-related pain conditions and people with chronic stress.
— Emily Mc Carthy, Massage Therapist

We asked her to tell us more about how, and why she got into the profession:

‘Prior to training in massage, I spent over a decade working as a writer and archivist, amongst other things.

When I was a teenager, my dad, then a computer programmer, developed RSI and explored many therapies to seek relief. He studied the Alexander Technique, and eventually found that yoga was the best path for his treatment. At the same time, my mum was beginning to study nutritional therapy. Whilst I leant towards a more academic path in my earlier career, I think it was perhaps always likely that I would go on to want to work with the body.

Throughout 2020 I did a lot of thinking and eventually decided to train in massage. I wanted to work with people and to help improve their lives.

Having spent a lot of time dissociating and having panic attacks when I was younger, I felt that helping people connect with their bodies and calm their minds was the path I wanted to go down and that massage was perfect for that.

My initial training was in Swedish and holistic massage, and I bring the soothing, flowing style I learnt here into all of my treatments, including clinical and sports treatments as bringing clients into a deeply relaxed state is a cornerstone of all of my treatments.

Having continued my massage education and chosen to study Advanced Clinical Massage, I now have a wide range of techniques at my disposal and will incorporate direct and indirect myofascial release, trigger point therapy, deep tissue work, and other clinical techniques into treatments as and where appropriate.

Before going mobile and joining Clinical Massage London, I completed a successful 6 month massage residency at Radio, Coal Drops Yard, during which I was featured as one of Country and Town House’s best massages in London.

For nearly two years, I was a massage volunteer at an NHS oncology center and recently volunteered at this year’s London marathon.

At the moment, I am particularly interested in starting to treat patients with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, as well as those with TMJ dysfunction or related conditions.

I have recently qualified in pregnancy massage and look forward to being able to welcome pregnant people into my practice.‘
